Poverty and children
The Organization for Poverty Alleviation and Development (OPAD) Children Living in Poverty Initiative targets children who experience economic hardship due to their families’ low income or lack of resources. Poverty can impact a child’s physical and emotional well-being, education, and ability to access basic necessities such as food, shelter, and healthcare.
The United Nations estimates that around 1 billion children worldwide live in poverty, lacking access to education and basic healthcare services. Poverty can have long-term effects on children, including low academic achievement, poor health outcomes, and limited job opportunities later in life. OPAD has developed programs and initiatives to address child poverty and support families in need.
Children are affected by poverty in a variety of ways.
At OPAD, we strive to create lasting positive change in the lives of children and youth aged 3–24 and their families. We do this by providing educational opportunities, healthcare, dental benefits, life-skills training, job-skills workshops, and community centers—all made possible through our child sponsorship program.
